Whether they’re handmade or not, finding the perfect pair of socks is one of those simple pleasures in life. Living in a cold climate, there is a time of year where cozy comfy socks is essential, and if they look great, wash well and you made them yourself—well that’s a total bonus.
I came across this pattern in summer of 2019 (a simpler time…) when I wanted to knit up something fun but relatively quick while between projects. At this point I had made a few pair of simple socks but nothing that looked this interesting. I had never read a chart before so this would be a challenge for me but I was ready!

The pattern name is Gladys and is free on Ravelry. I knit these so long ago I don’t remember any highlights, but any struggles that I did have was simply because I had never knit using a chart before and just learning how to follow it was the hardest part. That and paying attention to what I was doing to make sure it was working up correctly. This pattern is actually really simple since it’s your basic sock workup (top down) and the body is just using purl and knit stitches to make the beautiful pattern.
In terms of yarn, I’m pretty sure I used this Patons Classic Wool, Worsted in Natural which is a light brown colour. I actually love these socks not only because of the fit and the look but because the wool makes them warm but not too hot, they feel light to wear, breathe well and from fall through to spring I wear them almost weekly, machine washing them AND drying them and they are still in incredible shape. I can’t stress enough how much I love them!

My feet are on the smaller side, normally a size 6-6.5 US shoe so I knit a small. They are roomy for me but not too big. I actually love these because they aren’t too tight but they aren’t floppy either. If you’re a true size 6.5 or 7 a small would probably be perfect for you.
So, if you’re looking for a fun sock pattern that is FREE give these ones a go and maybe they will be your favourite socks too.
